What is bone broth?  It’s nothing new and was a staple of our ancestors diets.  When you think about it, when our ancestors consumed animals they ate the muscle meat (what we know as beef and chicken), the organ meat (like liver) and, they used bones to make broth.

Now days we mostly consume the muscle meat, but the different parts of animals have different amino acid profiles so they provide different nutrients, and we want and need to get a balance of these. Bone broth contains an abundance of minerals as well as 17 different amino acids.  These amino acids, plus glucosamine, collagen and many minerals found in bone broth, are excellent for gut health as well as many other things...take a look at the list below to see why you might want to start adding this nutrient goldmine into your daily diet!

1. Heal and seal your gut - A cup of bone broth a day works miracles for leaky gut syndrome, but it's also good for protecting non-leaky guts.  The gelatin in the bones typically used for making broth (such as knuckles, feet, and other joints) is said to help seal up holes in intestines.  This "patching" can help ease chronic diarrhea, constipation, and even some food intolerances.

2.  Digestion - Drinking broth with meals is an excellent way to aid digestion. Glycine stimulates the production of stomach acid, which is essential for the proper digestion of food.  Low stomach acid is surprisingly common in developed countries and can lead to a number of health issues.  The presence of gelatin in the gut also draws fluid into the intestine, improving gut motility and supporting healthy bowel movements.

2. Protect your joints - Taking glucosamine supplements has long been used as a first line of treatment for people with joint pain, but it turns out that bone broth has glucosamine, too. Unlike pills, the broth offers other nutritional and health benefits that can help reduce pain. Chondroitin sulfate, which is found in the cartilage that protects joints, for example, has been shown to help prevent osteoarthritis.

3. Skin Health - Bone broth is a rich source of collagen, keratin, and GAG hyaluronic acid and is thought to help improve the elasticity of skin as we age.  In a 2014 randomized and controlled trial, collagen consumption significantly improved skin elasticity and tended to improve skin moisture content.  Additionally, the GAG hyaluronic acid has been shown to promote skin cell proliferation and increase the presence of retinoic acid, which improves the skin’s hydration.

4. Sleep better - Research has shown that glycine, found in bone broth, may help improve sleep and ward off fatigue.  Glycine is an inhibitory neurotransmitter, meaning it can decrease anxiety, promote mental calmness, and help with sleep.

5. Support healthy immune system - Because of bone broth's high concentration of minerals, many experts believe it is a "superfood" that can strengthen your immune system.  Modern science has confirmed that the components of bone broth do indeed influence the immune system. For example, glycine receptors have been identified on the outer surface of several different types of immune cells.  The effect is a dampening of the immune response, resulting in reduced inflammatory signaling molecules and oxidative stress that may reduce damage to lungs and other tissues.

6. Increase bone strength -  A deficiency in your body of the raw materials for building bone can result in a number of different conditions.  When making bone broth, the phosphorus, magnesium, amino acids and calcium in the bones seep out into the broth, leaving you to sip all those essential nutrients for your own healthy bones.

7. Muscle and performance. While bone broth cannot (and should not) be your means for essential nutrients like amino acids, if you don't regularly eat meat, it can help supply amino acids from animal protein via bones. Amino acids are important for muscle recovery and energy—two key pieces of your fitness performance.

8. Metabolic and cardiovascular health - Remember glycine, an amino acid that is particularly abundant in bone broth? Glycine plays a role in blood sugar regulation by controlling gluconeogenesis, the production of glucose in the liver, and has even been suggested to counteract some of the negative effects of dietary fructose consumption.  Furthermore, glycine balances out methionine intake. Muscle meats and eggs are high in methionine, an amino acid that raises homocysteine levels in the blood. High homocysteine is a significant risk factor for serious diseases like heart disease, stroke, mental illness, and fractures and increases our need for homocysteine-neutralizing nutrients like vitamins B6, B12, folate, and choline. Those eating lots of animal protein need adequate glycine to balance out the methionine from meat, and you’ll get that from bone broth.

9.  Eye health - Yes, bone broth may improve eye health. The cornea consists of three primary layers: an outer epithelial layer, a middle layer, and an inner endothelial layer. Hyaluronic acid stimulates proliferation of the epithelial cells that line the cornea and is commonly used during eye surgery to help replace lost fluids.  The middle, or stromal, layer is largely made of collagen, keratan sulfates, and chondroitin sulfates. Keratan sulfates have been shown to be essential to the transparency of the cornea, while chondroitin sulfate has been shown to influence the development of neural pathways in the retina. The amino acid glycine has also been shown to delay the progression of cataracts in a rat model of diabetes.

10.  Brain health - Numerous components of bone broth influence the nervous system. The healthy fats in bone broth, particularly if made with marrow bones, provide a source of fuel and raw material for the brain. After all, more than 60 percent of the human brain is composed of fat.

However, if you prefer a different brand, look for collagen as the main ingredient, and that it says, “made from bones,” not just the broth of the meat. Many pre-packaged broths are much higher in sodium and contain toxic additives such as MSG, so pay attention to that when reading labels. You can always ask or look in your local health food store, farmers market, or go to the trusty farmer for bones to make your own.
