“Just have one bite! It’s your birthday… Halloween… National Donut Day…Tuesday at 4:30!”
How many times have you heard these kinds of questions or this kind of pressure when you’re trying to make healthy changes? Does it make you want to pull your hair out?
Here are some strategies get you through all the questioning and pressure from friends, family, coworkers, and strangers about YOUR diet (note: not THEIR diet!):
- Be honest. Changing your lifestyle for health and wellness is really hard to argue with. Tell them you’re doing this to try to improve your digestion, get rid of headaches or alleviate joint pain. Unless they’re just mean people, they will probably (hopefully) respect you and want the best for your health! If not, you might want to reevaluate the relationship.
- Try to make light of the situation. As much as you want to get defensive, deep down, try to keep things light. If they ask you what you’re doing, just tell them you’re trying to be healthier and ask them something about them.
- Have a buddy for support. It’s always easier when you know someone who has your back. This may be a co worker you’re doing One3One with, or a friend who knows how hard you’ve worked over the years and truly wants the best for you. You can text them a “code word” asking for their support.
- Remember, they probably want to make a healthy change, too! Even though people will give you a hard time, they are probably doing so because they want to change, too! Often, their insecurity will come out by challenging you to eat something unhealthy. Instead, tell them about this amazing program and all the wonderful changes you’ve noticed. Invite them to join your journey.
- Stand up for yourself and your health. If they won’t take a joke and keep giving you a hard time, you might need to be frank with them. Tell them to get off your back and remind yourself why you are doing this. Who cares what anyone else thinks! YOU are the only person who can take the BEST care of you.
- Know that you’re on “the road less traveled.” Lifestyle changes are definitely swimming upstream in our culture.
- Tell them how great you feel and how these changes have changed YOUR life. Inspire someone. Maybe they think one small bite is a minor deal, but you can tell them how much better you’re feeling since you’ve avoided inflammatory foods.
Ultimately, this is all for you, your family, and your health. Remember that you have all the power and support you need. Just tap into it!
